TK Challenge: from Leyden to New York!

TK Challenge

Our biggest achievements come from our biggest challenges”

One fine day in 1620 the pilgrim fathers, who resided in the beautiful Dutch city of Leyden, decided to head for the New World, where they started the great nation that later became the United States of America.

One fine day in 2015, three young ambitious lawyers at TK Law Firm in Leyden decided to launch a project with a view to eventually leading a number of runners to the greatest running event in the world, which takes place on the other side of the Atlantic at the very heart of the New World: the New York Marathon. Along the way, everyone in TK’s network is challenged to choose their own running challenge. For some, that is running 5 kilometres, while for others it is a marathon. This does not just generate a great deal of enthusiasm within TK, but also among its clients and partners. Hundreds of runners have decided to join the project now known as the TK Challenge.

The TK Challenge community is spreading far and wide among TK staff and colleagues from clients and partners. Now, it is ready to for the world stage, made possible through the GGI network. This way, we can make the TK Challenge community a global one.

But this is more than just a business running challenge aimed at fostering a sense of community, enhancing the vitality and spirits among employees of the organisations involved.

We all hope to live long and prosperous lives. Running helps us to fulfil this wish. But what if – in the words of “Ol’ Blue Eyes”, Frank Sinatra himself – you face the final curtain and medical treatment is powerless to help? How do we make those final months or weeks of life worth living? Across Europe, including in The Netherlands, hospices are established to serve exactly this need: they offer a safe and comfortable place, with the right people on hand to help where they can. However, health insurance does not cover all of the costs. As a result, the hospices rely on volunteers and charity.

Here’s where the TK Challenge comes in. In all its vitality, the TK Challenge aims to collect EUR 142,195 for a local hospice, setting an example for the country and all of Europe. And yes, the amount is the distance of a marathon in metres plus 100,000.

TK is a long standing member of the multidisciplinary GGI alliance, and it is only logical that we involve other GGI members in this event, which in view of its goal to bring as many runners as possible to the New York Marathon on Sunday 6 November 2016, has a truly international character. For this reason, it is only right that GGI is represented there. As a member of GGI, we would like to invite you to participate, whether you are a keen marathon runner, or simply share in the TK Challenge’s goal to improve hospice care, both locally and globally. A GGI event is planned in New York City for Friday 4 November 2016, where all members and clients, runners or not, are more than welcome.

Would you like to take part as a marathon runner? If so, please contact the TK Challenge team at TK Law Firm by calling +3171 5358050 or emailing

Would you like to help make GGI part of the TK Challenge’s success? If so, simply donate what you can spare by making a transfer to the TK Challenge Foundation’s bank account: IBAN: NL88RABO 0306770865; name: Stichting TK Challenge. We will ensure that all donations, whether in euro, dollar, yen, zloty, ruble, lira, shekel or otherwise, reach their intended destination.

GGI: founding member of AILFN

AILFN (the Association of International Law Firm Networks) is a new organisation that represents the common interests of global and regional law firm networks. AILFN has four purposes: (1) enhance the position and recognition of all networks in the legal market; (2) establish common principles to maintain standard of quality; (3) provide a forum for networks to exchange information; and (4) negotiate agreements with vendors that can increase the efficiency and effectiveness of networks.

AILFN was launched in October 2015, ahead of the IBA International Bar Association congress in Vienna.

Stephen McGarry, founder of Lex Mundi, World Service Group WSG and, has established the new voice of the profession, together with some of the world’s leading law firm networks.

Today, the media is fixated on three models for global legal businesses: big law firms, Swiss Vereins and the Big Four. Structurally, each of these models is inherently ineffective and inefficient for global legal practice. The most efficient and effective model is a law firm network composed of independent firms. Unfortunately, these are not yet recognised as the best strategic option in the global market, undermining both their credibility among their members and their value to clients.

This is because of a lack of awareness of the following:

  • Stand-alone firms can provide the most cost-effective service as each is managed independently within its respective market.
  • The 60 largest law firm networks have been established for average time of 20 years. This provides an extraordinarily stable group of firms who have strong relationships with each other.
  • Network members have global and local coverage while the other models are limited to large cities. Members of the largest 50 networks employ almost 300,000 lawyers within 7,000 independent law firms.
  • The networks are the only organisations to cover virtually all the world’s commercial centres. The largest networks have members with more than 600 offices. Only a handful of law firms have more than 50 offices.
  • Regional networks provide in depth resources in their respective national and local markets.

The issue is that no individual network can change the perception that law firm networks are an unimportant part of the global legal sector. This is because more than 95% of network’s activities are focused internally on members building relationships to benefit clients, as opposed to law firms and the Big Four where 95% of marketing is focused on external brand recognition.

The AILFN can change this misconception by focusing on marketing the general benefits of networks to the legal profession as well as to potential clients seeking the most cost-effective and efficient representation.

GGI NZ Business Summit, Auckland, New Zealand, 10-12 March 2016

GGI NZ Business SUmmit

On Thursday the 10th March, we welcomed GGI members to Auckland, New Zealand for the 2016 GGI NZ Business Summit.

The Australian and New Zealand GGI member firms have been connecting annually to strengthen the connections in this closely aligned region. This Business Summit was an opportunity to come together again and explore further how to assist one another’s firms and also to extend the invitation to the wider GGI neighbourhood.

In traditional GGI style, the conference teed off with a round of golf. The Muriwai golf course is situated on the rugged west coast of Auckland and has magnificent coastal views over the black sand beach. Those who were not interested in golf visited the Muriwai gannet colony where they were able to view from above, the last 300 or so nesting birds with their adolescents, before they also departed for their long flight to Australia. The west coast was at its best, in full sun with a prevailing westerly sea breeze keeping the temperature pleasant.

In the evening, an extended group of GGI member firms and their staff and companions enjoyed a cocktail function in the Bellini Bar of the Hilton Hotel. The hotel is located on a wharf jutting out over the Auckland harbour affording the Bellini Bar views of the working harbour with ferries, water taxis and cruise ships coming and going all evening. Matt Donaldson (Walker Davey) opened the event and thanked the guests for travelling to this corner of the world and investing time and goodwill into these important relationships. The evening ended with an unplanned dinner at Wildfire Restaurant for those who had the energy and the appetites to keep going.

Friday morning dawned with threatening rain clouds chasing the ferry all the way to Waiheke Island. The rain caught up just as the group were disembarking from the bus at Cable Bay Vineyards. The business sessions at the vineyard were opened by Mike Bowden (BVO) and began with Peter Kaeser (GGI) who needed no introduction. Peter brought the 30 members up to date on the Geneva Capital Group. Mr Phil Ahern (Morrison Kent) then facilitated a group discussion with the aim of arriving at agreed business development objectives and actions. Finally, the guest speaker, Mr Dylan Lawrence, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE), spoke on the current state of the trade relationship between Australia and New Zealand and the role NZTE plays in assisting this market place.

With the business done, the group and their companions were given a guided sampling of the Cable Bay wines in the tasting room overlooking the vats. During the morning the clouds lifted and the Cable Bay dining room once again had sea views across the harbour to Auckland city in the distance. Lunch was followed by a bus tour of Waiheke Island with vistas around every corner. The unfortunate guide valiantly battled to share his knowledge of the area but was drowned out by the general chatter of the group as they shared ideas and experiences.

The closing event of the conference took the group up the Sky Tower, the tallest building in Auckland, to The Sugar Club restaurant. Here, while dining at one of Auckland’s signature restaurants and watching the sun set over the city and the Waitakere Ranges, the group reflected on the day and the learnings and contemplated future opportunities.

The GGI NZ Business Summit broadened the understanding of the depth of expertise available within the GGI alliance and honed the thinking on how to build trust for mutual benefit. There was an excellent spirit and it is the hope of the delegates that future Australasian conferences will be honoured by attendance from more of their neighbours so the warmth and hospitality can be extended further.
